Have you ever felt the dissatisfaction or restlessness that comes from thinking that you're not “there” yet? 

In this episode we share about our experience at the Sagrada Família. We visited this basilica six years ago during a family vacation to Barcelona, Spain. Many consider the Sagrada Família to be an unfinished masterpiece, and we agree. We learned so many lessons by reminiscing about this renowned, yet unfinished, piece of architecture.

As you reflect with us, you’ll learn how life can be most satisfying when you balance the joy of accomplishment with the appreciation for everything you are right now. Also, re-focusing on the process helps you reap the most benefits, whether that be happiness or the motivation to reach your goals. 

In this episode, Ashwini coaches Archana on her concern of not having a green thumb. You’ll get to see how a short conversation leads to insights that change her entire approach to her garden. 

The second part of the episode includes commentary and reflection on the coaching session. We discuss:

• That not having reached the goal doesn’t meant that you’re not on your way there;
• The importance of creatively applying all your strengths and abilities to your project;
• How coaching is as much about honoring who we are right now, as it is about growth and transformation;
• How we can choose how we feel better in relation to a situation;
• How not to stop at insights gained during a coaching session, but actually applying the insights to create the desired results;
• That a person’s mindset continues to grow and evolve even beyond a single coaching session.

Coaching is a tool that can be used to help people discover insights that will give them a more sure plan toward their goals. It can also help them feel better and live with more ease. Central to coaching is the idea that the person being coached is the expert on their own life. A coach functions with an outside perspective and creates a non-judgmental space. As a result, with the coach asking meaningful questions and gently challenging the person’s existing views, the individual being coached deepens their own self-knowledge, as well as accelerates toward their desired outcomes in life. 

What is the last story that you heard that stands out in your mind? What impression did it leave on you? 

As humans we have a deep appreciation for story, and we use story to develop connections with others and to enhance learning. Storytelling is also an easy and effective way of sharing who you are and what you believe in. Whether you have a career in the sciences or the arts, storytelling is important to meaningfully translate your message to audiences across disciplines. 

For those who are afraid of public speaking — whether one-on-one or in front of large groups —in this episode we talk about how focusing on your audience and sharing a story can help to improve your comfort with communicating persuasively and effectively in these settings.
