Having worked previously with the Australian Track Cycling Team and been head coach of the hugely successful GB Paralympic cycling programme, he was also both an International cyclist in his own right and also cycled as a tandem partner including setting a world record in the kilo at the 2008 Paralympic World Cup. We chatted about coaching the athlete In front of you and not the programme, individualisation and performance planning, the importance of having plenty of tools available to you as a coach as well as how he measures and monitors performance. He’s really easy to chat to and a very humble guy and I start with asking what excites him.Show Notes: British Cycling - https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/Australian Track Cycling Team - https://www.auscycling.org.au/Jason Queally - https://www.teamgb.com/athlete/jason-queally/69LWPBVXJblHRlPC4Y5b8FChris Hoy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_HoyCraig MacLean - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_MacLeanRio Paralympics - https://www.paralympic.org/rio-2016Marginal Gains - https://jamesclear.com/marginal-gainsMore About Jon Norfolk:Twitter - https://twitter.com/robbieelliott3?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-elliott-6971383b/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_ElliottListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Robbie Elliott Part 2 - Being First Is Not Always The Best
This week its part 2 of my chat with former footballer Robbie Elliott. Robbie spent two decades as a professional footballer, playing over 140 times for Newcastle United and over 250 appearances in total. Last week we chatted about his own playing career and some of the iconic managers he worked under including Ossie Ardilles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalgleish, Sam Allardyce and Sir Bobby Robson. This week we focus on his career post playing from his role at Newcastle in the sports science department to moving to the US to join the Nike research lab and the other performance work he’s been involved since his retirement. It’s a fascinating and insightful journey.Show Notes: Mark Hulse - https://www.nufcblog.com/2009/06/27/coaches-hulse-and-elliott-leave-newcastle-for-liverpool/Nike Portland Headquarters - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pqsUfK2N1oNike European Headquarters - https://jobs.nike.com/ehqNike’s Innovation Kitchen - https://www.freshnessmag.com/2016/09/20/wired-magazine-nike-innovation-kitchen/England Rugby Sevens - https://www.englandrugby.com/england/sevens-men#indexSeb Coe - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_CoeLeBron James - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeBron_JamesTiger Woods - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_WoodsLA Sports Teams - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_in_Los_AngelesRed Bull Facility - https://www.si.com/edge/2015/05/08/sweat-mecca-red-bull-high-performance-centerMalcolm Gladwell Books - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Malcolm-Gladwell/e/B000APOE98?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_2&qid=1653303486&sr=8-2The Checklist Manifesto Book by Atul Gawande - https://amzn.to/3G7Jk3m Maradona Documentary - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuErPYsoaR4Living With The Lions Documentary - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Living-Lions-Sir-Ian-McGeechan/dp/B0733RMVQ7One Night In Turin Documentary - https://www.amazon.co.uk/One-Night-Turin-Gary-Oldman/dp/B07N126MYGESPN 30 For 30 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/30_for_30More About Robbie Elliott:Twitter - https://twitter.com/robbieelliott3?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-elliott-6971383b/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_ElliottListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Robbie Elliott Part 1 - There's Definitely A Difference Between Luck And Fortune
After last weeks chat with Darius Charles, we stay on the football theme with another ex Professional footballer, Robbie Elliott. Robbie had almost two decades as a professional footballer, playing over 140 times for his beloved Newcastle United and over 250 appearances in total, which also included spells at Sunderland, Leeds, Hartlepool and an eventful four years at Bolton Wanderers. Over his career, he’ worked under some iconic managers including Ossie Ardiles, Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Sam Allardyce and Sir Bobby Robson and we chat about all of those managers and the twists and turns Robbie had across his career and his learning from that. I met Robbie first when he was working for the Nike research lab and he’s forged a career in sports technology, innovation and performance since his retirement. All of that we will chat about in part two next week, but as we sat outside the bustling Westfield shopping centre in West London, we started with Robbie’s time in the Newcastle academy and how that compares to the modern-day set-up.Show Notes: Southampton Football Club - https://www.southamptonfc.com/Alan Shearer - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_ShearerGateshead Stadium - https://www.gogateshead.com/article/5829/Gateshead-International-StadiumNewcastle Football Club - https://www.nufc.co.uk/Ossie Ardiles - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osvaldo_ArdilesYTS - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth_Training_SchemeAlan Thompson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Thompson_(footballer,_born_1973)Lee Clark - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Clark_(footballer)Steve Watson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_WatsonJim Smith - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Smith_(footballer,_born_1940)Middlesborough Football Club - https://www.mfc.co.uk/Bobby Saxton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_SaxtonRoy Aitken - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_AitkenJohn Burridge - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_BurridgeACL Injury - https://mayocl.in/3MuoxcMLilleshall - https://www.lilleshallnsc.co.uk/nsc/ Kevin Keegan - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_KeeganNewcastle promotion against Grimsby - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNk_W6CFJKwRob Lee - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_LeeJohn Beresford - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Beresford_(footballer)Les Ferdinand - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_FerdinandDavid Ginola - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_GinolaBrian Kilcline - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_KilclineKevin Sheedy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Sheedy_(Irish_footballer)David Kelly - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Kelly_(association_footballer)Steve Howey - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Howey_(footballer)Faustino Asprilla - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faustino_AsprillaBarry Venison - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_VenisonPeter Beardsley - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_BeardsleyDavid Batty - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_BattyZone Of Optional Function - https://bit.ly/3Nk3YzDKenny Dalglish - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_DalglishAlex Ferguson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_FergusonPLC - https://bit.ly/3wuJKMUBolton Wanderers Football Club - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolton_Wanderers_F.C.Steve Black - https://bit.ly/38woNJmEarl Barrett - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_BarrettMichael Appleton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_AppletonColin Todd - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_ToddSam Allardyce - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_AllardyceCharlie Brown - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_BrownMLS - https://www.mlssoccer.com/Arsene Wenger - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ars%C3%A8ne_WengerSir Bobby Robson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_RobsonFreddie Shepherd - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddy_ShepherdNorthumbria University - https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/Bike for Bobby - https://bit.ly/3wlhNYZ=More About Robbie Elliott:Twitter - https://twitter.com/robbieelliott3?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbie-elliott-6971383b/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_ElliottListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck

Darius Charles - I Was Creating A World Where Opportunities Would Come My Way
This week I’m delighted to bring you a chat with someone who grabs life by both hands, former footballer Darius Charles.Darius retired from professional footballer just a matter of weeks ago after playing professionally for sixteen years for the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Brentford and most recently, AFC Wimbledon. We talk about how he feels about that and also the journey football has taken him on personally. His mum had him when she was sixteen years old and Darius has had plenty of obstacles over his life that he has managed to overcome and use as the energy he brings to everyone he meets. We had this conversation in a recording studio close to where Darius spent a large part of his childhood, in Hanwell, West London. Darius is currently being followed by a documentary crew and our conversation in the studio will be part of a programme called ’Sidelines’, which will be out later in the year.I got to know Darius about a year ago and since then I’ve always enjoyed and looked forward to every conversation we have ever had. As he says himself, he’s a very fiery character and I think by the end of this conversation you will see how he is using that desire in a positive way, a passion that will change lives. We talk about role models, creating opportunities and being self-sufficient, the fear of your career always being one manager’s decision away from ending as well as dealing with being loaned out and Injured. But we start with that difficult decision to hang up his boots.Show Notes: Brentford Football Club - https://www.brentfordfc.com/Helen Keller - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_KellerScott Fitzgerald - https://bit.ly/3ysK4y0Thurrock Football Club - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thurrock_F.C.Nathan Broome - https://bit.ly/3wlzQggGareth Ainsworth - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gareth_AinsworthGraham Westley - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_WestleySocial Identity Theory - https://www.britannica.com/topic/social-identity-theoryPaulo Coelho book ’The Alchemist’ - https://amzn.to/3vYJcj1Don Miguel Ruiz book ’The Four Agreements’ - https://amzn.to/3yu8KXeThe Last Dance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQk2hJs2ToAMichael Jordan - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_JordanBill Cartwright - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_CartwrightChicago Bulls - https://www.nba.com/bulls/Steve Kerr - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_KerrPhil Jackson’s book ‘Eleven Rings’ - https://amzn.to/3yrOFk4Jay Shetty’s Podcast - https://apple.co/3yrOQMgJake Humphrey's High Performance Podcast - https://apple.co/3whdZ9YSteven Bartlett’s Podcast - https://apple.co/3l0BdMhErwin Valencia’s Podcast Episode - https://apple.co/38gxqaIMaya Angelou - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_AngelouKendrick Lamar - https://www.kendricklamar.com/More About Darius Charles:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/everybody_lovesd/?hl=enTwitter - https://twitter.com/dariuscharles00LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3L0qKeqWikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darius_CharlesListen & Subscribe to The Ben Ryan Podcast:Ben’s Website - http://benryan.co.uk/bio/Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ben-ryan-podcast/id1553400216Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/3iUL1eLA7HFKt5gxO7Uf4j?si=oN9YN6uFRSSGbO6kR01ONQAmazon Music - https://amzn.to/3shGDnOTuneIn - http://tun.in/pkdsmBen On Social:Follow me on Instagram - https://bit.ly/2Z5QSitFollow me on Twitter - https://bit.ly/3ph5W7oFollow me on LinkedIn - https://bit.ly/3ah8FtvRead about me - https://amzn.to/2NLu0Ck
