The new US Dietary Guidelines just published in January 2026 by Health and Human Services was formulated behind closed doors, without public scrutiny, by a newly appointed Committee whose members have backgrounds in the meat and dairy industry. Their recommendations heavily favor meat and dairy products and disregard the previous 2024 work done by scientists and nutritionists which focus more on the importance of grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits as sources for a healthier complete diet. The focus on meat and dairy in the new Guidelines has met with disfavor among nutrition professionals as being heavy precursors to chronic diseases such as heart attack, stroke, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

Description

Our guest Anna Herby, DHSc RD CDE, Nutrition Education Specialist at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), details the bias and lack of scientific basis for the new Guidelines which ignore decades of proven science on what constitutes healthy nutrition.  PCRM, a health advocacy group with 17,000 physician members, has filed a complaint with HHS and USDA urging them to withdraw the guidelines. The organization cites concerns of conflicts of interest, noting that members of the panel have ties to the beef and dairy industry.Learn more about healthy nutrition from PCRM:https://www.pcrm.org/good-nutrition/nutrition-programs-policies/2020-2025-dietary-guidelinesRead a complete analysis of previous and new guidelines on GoToHealth:https://gotohealthmedia.com/whats-wrong-with-the-new-food-pyramid-guidelines/  If you're enjoying the Show, it would mean the world to us if you took a second to leave a five star review on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify, or wherever you're listening to us.
