Ōtepoti powerhouse Pearly* on their debut album 'Not So Sweet'.

Pearly* have all the qualities you associate with guitar music being made in the deep south - and more.

Yes, their music radiates an effortless ‘cooler than you’ charm.

Yes, its some of the best guitar music being made in the world right now.

Yes, theres a tightrope dance between sincerity and sarcasm. These are the things Ōtepoti Dunedin has been excelling in for ages.

Pearly* have all that in bucketloads and more.

They’re restless both musically and physically - following up their debut EP with a debut album in good time, playing some of their first shows outside of Dunedin, and impressing new audiences consistently. All the while securing plaudits from the industry at a level that can be difficult for Ōtepoti bands to achieve.

I caught up with Joel (Guitar, Vocals) and Phaedra (Bass, Vocals) pre-soundcheck at Space Academy (Ōtautahi Christchurch) to talk about the formation of the band, the new album ‘Not So Sweet’ and the origin of the 90’s aesthetics of the band.

Enjoy the interview and check out the debut record ‘Not So Sweet’.

Mt.
