44. From Olympian to Obstetrician and Women's Health Advocate with Jana Pittman

In this episode of The MumSafe Movement Podcast Jen talks to Jana Pittman.  Jana is a two times world champion and four times Commonwealth champion in the sport of athletics,

When continual injuries hampered her athletic career which were likely related to her first birth experience she swapped the track for the ice, joining the Australian women's bobsled team and becoming the first woman to represent Australia in both a Summer (2000, 2004) and Winter (2014) Olympic Games.

Off the track, Jana completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Masters of Reproductive Medicine and is  completing her PhD in Obstetrics.  Jana is the proud mum of her six children and also recently published her second book ‘Enough’

In 2021, Jana was a participant in the gruelling television show SAS Australia on Channel 7. She made it to the last day of the course and was the final female standing among the 18 celebrity recruits, despite having given birth only five and a half months previously.

Jen and Jana cover a lot in this episode from what it was like to be an elite athlete, give birth and return to elite competition and her passion for women’s health, bridging the gaps between industries and ensuring every woman is fully informed and empowered in their body and choices.

Key topics include:

  • Balancing a Busy Life and a Big Family
  • Embracing Self-Worth and Personal Growth
  • Addressing Pelvic Floor Issues
  • Managing Fear and Overcoming Challenges
  • The Need for Better Education and Support for Women

Ep 43. Building her Fitness Business in 8 Hours a Week with Anuschka Wyatt-Weeks

In this episode of The MumSafe Movement Podcast Jen talks to Anuschka, MumSafe Trainer and owner of Feel Vibrant Fitness in Cleveland on the Redlands Coast in QLD.

Anuschka specialises in educating and empowering women through Movement and Mindset to ‘Feel Vibrant!’. Specifically working with women who want help to positively cope with the challenges and demands of daily life at every stage of life.

Since 2012 Anuschka has been helping individuals and groups through health and fitness coaching to make postive changes to their lives.

Anuschka gave birth to her 2 children in her early 40’s and experienced a collision of post natal and peri-menopausal life. This experience is one of the drivers for her focus and dedication to be part of the movement of health and fitness professionals that are focussing specifically on women's health and fitness through all the stages of a woman's life.

Annuscka is one of the MumSafe quiet achievers who has very limited time each week to work on and in her business. I wanted to delve into her journey because she is a true example of how slow and steady wins the race and I truly believe that when she chooses to go full throttle within her business that because her foundations run so deep she will absolutely fly.

Ep 42. Five Reasons Your Fitness Business For Mums is Not Working

In this episode, Jen discusses the reasons why fitness businesses for mums may not be working. She covers five main points: not understanding your values, being afraid to own your niche, having a brand that doesn't stand out, not knowing your numbers, and trying to do it alone. Jen emphasises the importance of knowing your values and aligning them with your business, owning your niche and standing out in the marketplace, creating a memorable brand, understanding your financial numbers, and seeking support from a community of like-minded professionals.

In this episode Jen covers the following key topics:

  • Understanding your values and aligning them with your business to make decisions that are in line with your priorities.
  • Not being afraid to own your niche and market specifically to mums. This will help you stand out in a crowded marketplace.
  • Creating a memorable brand that speaks directly to mums and differentiates you from competitors.
  • Knowing your financial numbers and understanding how they impact your business.
  • The importance of seeking support from a community of like-minded professionals who understand the challenges of running a fitness business for mums.

They were awarded as the Tasmanian State Winner & National Finalist for the Telstra Best of Business Awards 2022, as well as Winner for the Australian Women’s Small Business Champion Awards 2022.

Filipa’s own passion for helping “busy” people have more energy, productivity and connection, came from her own personal experience of body burnout, after juggling the demands of business, family, and her failing health.

In this episode Jen & Filly discuss the following key topics:

  • What burnout is
  • How burnout can affect mums
  • Chronic stress, exhaustion, fatigue, brain fog, mood changes, and gut issues.
  • How hormonal changes during peri menopause and menopause can exacerbate burnout symptoms.
  • How reconnecting with the body and listening to its cues is crucial in preventing and addressing burnout.
  • How trainers can support mums experiencing burnout by adapting exercise programs based on energy levels and physical markers, and by encouraging practices like breathing exercises and body scans.
  • How fixing burnout requires addressing the root causes, such as stress management, hormone balance, and self-care.
  • How stress affects the body's nervous system and can lead to gut issues and other health problems.
  • How listening to your body and asking for help are crucial in preventing and recovering from burnout.
  • Uncovering and reprogramming deep-rooted beliefs can lead to lasting change and improved well-being.
  • How to create a supportive home environment involves clear communication, setting boundaries, and taking care of your own needs.
