Dario Costi un articolo pubblicato sulla rivista “Left “ di marzo 2025 che presentava<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp; </span>una intuizione di Costi sulla relazione tra il cerchio luminoso di questo dipinto e l’oculo del Pantheon, insieme ad altri aspetti che riguardano la relazione tra il committente e l’artista e la collocazione del dipinto, la presenza di connotazioni omoerotiche che la critica d’arte italiana tende a offuscare al di là di ogni evidenza.<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp; </span>Ma, studiando &nbsp;il dipinto attraverso degli ingrandimenti molto elevati su immagini ad alta risoluzione,<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp; </span>ho creduto di individuare la testa di un quarto cane che si infila mansueto tra le tre teste di Cerbero! Il pittore viveva con il cardinale nella grande dimora di palazzo Madama in quel 1597 in cui il dipinto fu realizzato nel Casino dell’Aurora nella ex Villa Ludovisi, quindi è certo che Cornacchia fosse anche lui conosciuto e “residente”<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp;a p</span>alazzo Madama. Il suo infilarsi tra le teste del mostro potrebbe essere una facezia che il pittore lancia a chi è in grado di scoprirlo, anche se in questo caso sono passati più di quattro secoli.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: times;"><span>Questa idea è stata anticipata in mezza riga finale dell’articolo citato su “Left”, diffusa sui social e descritta in dettaglio in maggiori dettagli nella VII edizione del mio </span><i>Lo specchio di Caravaggio</i><span>, Vita Nostra edizioni, 2025 pp. 18-21.</span></span></p><p>Infine è doveroso ricordare che Rossella Vodret ha scritto: "le particolari e realistiche espressioni delle tre teste del cane (mansueto, ringhioso e mentre abbaia) ci consentono di ipotizzare che in questo&nbsp;<span style="font-family: times;">caso il 'modello' possa essere stato il cane che, secondo Baglione, Caravaggio portava sempre con sé (...) anche se in questo caso più che un barbone nero, Cerbero sembra un bastardino bianco e nero incontrato per strada".
