I question the idea that a degree proves someone can think, learn, or do useful work. Harvard's grade debate shows how much pressure students face when their future rests on a number. Protecting that number can take the place of learning. A clip from Joe Rogan and Caleb Hammer raises the status gap between degree holders and people who work in trades. I connect that to the gap between what young adults expect to earn and what entry-level jobs pay. The New York Fed's labor market data and Strada's research show why a degree alone cannot promise the work a graduate expects. I also question what colleges mean when they promise to teach critical thinking. I look at Academically Adrift and the debate over how its learning results were measured. My concern is what families can see their child actually do. Debt can also leave young adults with less time and money for books, tutors, lessons, and learning they choose for themselves. Steve Irwin learned through years of animal work. A cattle farmer I met built deep knowledge through tests, records, and daily practice. Those examples show why I won't let a college define who gets to be educated. Ask whether your child can explain an idea, solve a problem, take feedback, and change their mind when the evidence calls for it. Education should show up in their actions.
