George receives a letter that reads "My dear Mr. Valentine, my name is Peta Van Rassle. I'm a research chemist for one of the rubber companies with offices in Rangoon. It has been years since I even followed the American newspapers, let alone kept abreast of your customs. I have never been in your city before, so, you will understand how impossible it is for me to locate a certain man without your help. A man who, like myself, arrived from Burma. A man who is here, but is not here". Later, George and Brooksie meet with Van Rassle to talk with him about his letter, and the man he wants to find. Van Rassle says "It is a debt of honor, you understand, a purely personal matter. I must see him, and have only a few days left before I return to the jungle". Brooksie says "Wait a minute, Mr. Van Rassle. You said this man is here, but he isn't here". Van Rassle says "I assure you it is just as confusing to me as it is to you, Miss Brooks". George says "Well, to start, what is this man's name?" Van Rassle says "Hollowell, Terence Hollowell. He is about forty years old, tall, and quite distinguished". George asks "Does he live here? Have you looked him up in the phone book?" Van Rassle says "Oh, yes. He maintains a residence. I telephoned from my hotel and was informed by a caretaker that Mr. Hollowell won't be arriving from Burma until tomorrow". George says "Well, then he just hasn't gotten here yet". Van Rassle says "Yes, he has. I came by plane, and I'm sure he was at least a day or so ahead of me. Here, look at this cablegram". George reads "It's a waste of time, your trying to contact me. I assure you that, under the present circumstances, our meeting one another would be needlessly painful to you. It's a stroke of fate, that's all. Please understand, Terence Hollowell". Van Rassle says "That cablegram was sent from this city, so, he is in town. Yet, at his home they insist that he is not. He is here and he isn't".
