Did We Kick Our Phone Habit in a Week?
We decided to spend a week cutting back on our phone use. Then we use the experience to unpack our increasingly complicated relationship with our phones. Anrui confesses that her daily screen time once hit 11-13 hours. Matthew’s phone use swings wildly depending on whether he’s alone or with other people. Yiwen discovers that she feels most at ease when her phone is physically out of reach. Seriously, how do you quit your phone?? After trying it ourselves, we identified three methods: keep your phone physically out of reach, fight tech with tech, or go cold turkey. We tested everything from hardware like Brick to apps designed to keep us in check and shared our honest verdicts. We also trace how phones evolved from productivity tools like the IBM Simon, Nokia, and BlackBerry into today’s irresistible “everything” devices. The iPhone, the App Store, push notifications, infinite scroll, the Like button, the advertising economy, and recommendation algorithms—how did these pieces come together to turn our phones into pocket-sized slot machines? Along the way, we discuss Kevin Roose’s and Catherine Price’s phone detox experiments, the history of the Luddite movement, and the striking differences between quitting your phone in China and the U.S., where WeChat and social media are woven into everyday life in very different ways. 00:00 Why cutting back on phones? 00:36 11-13 hours of screen time a day—is there any hope for us? 07:48 An app that turns a rock into a self-control tool 12:17 How did our phones become “slot machines”? 13:28 The era of electronic learning devices, MP3/MP4 players, and iPods 16:37 Tracing the smartphone’s roots: IBM Simon, Nokia, Wenquxing, and BlackBerry 17:45 The iPhone arrives in 2007: a revolutionary three-in-one device 19:36 BlackBerry goes mainstream—and work follows us everywhere 22:51 The App Store and push notifications 23:56 Infinite scroll 24:34 Facebook introduces the Like button 25:30 The rise of the advertising economy and recommendation algorithms 26:03 Tristan Harris and the “slot machine in your pocket” 35:03 The media pecking order: is reading a book really different from scrolling? 37:05 Our complicated feelings of guilt 39:01 Three ways to quit: physical separation, fighting tech with tech, and going cold turkey 45:00 The history of the Luddites and today’s tech refusers 46:14 How attitudes toward technology differ in China and the U.S. 49:01 Kevin Roose’s phone lockbox experiment 49:32 Catherine Price and the paid “phone detox challenge” 57:24 So, did a week without our phones make us smarter? The Links】 Kevin Roose: Do Not Disturb: How I Ditched My Phone and Unbroke My Brain (2019) Catherine Price的Screen/Life Balance挑战 Brick(物理锁机硬件) Opal(游戏化屏幕时间管理APP) BePresent(游戏化屏幕时间管理APP) Tristan Harris: How to Unhijack Your Mind from Your Phone (2016) 【我们是谁 Who We Are】 新新人类是一档由几个与互联网一起长大的新生代科技记者主持的播客,致力于站在中美交汇点上,解读全球科技潮流与人文的交织。 马修:一个网瘾晚期的全职养猫人 杜安蕤:一个想当裁缝的科技/文化撰稿人 一闻:一个对地铁比手机更上瘾的记者 【支持我们 Please Support Us】 如果喜欢这期节目并愿意支持我们: 海外用户:patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl 海内用户:afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod 商务合作邮箱:[email protected] If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Those Abroad: patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl Those in China: afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod Business Inquiries Email: [email protected]

In this episode of Pixel Perfect, host Yiwen takes you inside the "Same Room Podcast Festival" in New York, where four guests from different backgrounds sit down to discuss a pressing question: in the age of AI, where exactly is a creator's "moat"? From an AI professional at a Silicon Valley tech giant to a film director hand-crafting videos in special education, from a print journalist wrestling with questions of identity to a physics PhD running science-outreach experiments — we don't just talk about technical efficiency. We dig deeper, into the aesthetic conditioning and linguistic inequality lurking behind the technology. AI can imitate Hamlet, but does it understand the history and pain behind it? This episode pushes back against the simplistic "AI will kill creators" binary, exploring instead how to hold onto humanity's most essential faculties — judgment and attention — in an era where "everything can be replaced." 00:37 – Crossing Lines: First encounters with AI, from tech workers to traditional media creators 08:00 – Confession Time: The psychological burden and stigma of using AI for first drafts 12:56 – Friction in Practice: Where AI falls short — sign language translation and culturally specific contexts 18:20 – Algorithmic Inequality: How speakers of minority languages get squeezed out of resources in the AI era 24:47 – The "Distillation" of Creativity: Can AI produce top-tier work just by learning from top-tier creators? 35:31 – US vs. China: Why Hollywood is fighting AI so hard while creators back home stay open to it 40:40 – Vibe Coding Warning: Does skipping the "getting your hands dirty" phase erode foundational creativity? 47:29 – The Moat Debate: Discernment, the right to interpret, and why protecting attention matters 52:18 – Q&A: The AI-driven micro-dramas and what content creation is really for 69:35 – Maybe there is no moat — the value is in enjoying the act of creating itself 【支持我们 Please Support Us】 如果喜欢这期节目并愿意支持我们: 海外用户:patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl 海内用户:afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod 商务合作邮箱:[email protected] If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Those Abroad: patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl Those in China: afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod Business Inquiries Email: [email protected]

Short drama takes Hollywood
读书会链接:https://luma.com/buwyzrkk On July 24, we’ll be reading Patrick McGee’s bestselling book Apple in China together online. The Q&A session will be conducted in English. Contract marriage-to-love, domineering CEOs, secret babies, and half-human, half-beast werewolves who are gentle only to the female lead. These cheesy, melodramatic, low-budget tropes are what brought short dramas into the hearts of housewives across the American Midwest. Short dramas may be one of China’s most successful cultural exports. In this episode, we are joined by Mushu, a former practitioner in the overseas short drama industry. From the front lines of the set, we talk about how short dramas made their way from China to the U.S.; whether they are a product of the film and television industry, an adaptation of web fiction, or a tech product disguised as content; and when directors, actors, producers, and platforms are all working for data and algorithms, who actually gets to be called the creator? We also talked about the complicated and turbulent film and television industry behind short dramas: how the Hollywood strikes unexpectedly helped short dramas take off; how Chinese film school students with big dreams went from “graduating into unemployment” to “graduating straight onto a set”; what kinds of ideas about love and trauma lie behind domineering CEOs, werewolves, contract marriage-to-love, and secret babies; and whether the endlessly addictive AI fruit dramas might be the future of short dramas. Short dramas are like a high-dose, sugar-coated, short-acting painkiller. They diagnose ordinary people’s most unspeakable desires and pain with precision, but they cannot actually treat them. Instead, they stop at the most crucial moment, and ask you to pay for the next episode. 05:23 Mushu: a former short drama practitioner who began working in the industry in 2022 10:04 The profits of a commercial system, the crew of an indie production: the strange hybrid that is the short drama set 14:06 Can we really blame the actors for bad acting in short dramas? 17:18 Data tells platforms what connects kneeling, slapping, and the desire to pay 23:50 Who did short dramas create opportunities for? Chinese film students and the shift from “graduating into unemployment” to “graduating into work” 27:18 Hollywood’s downturn, the actors’ strike, and the rise of the short drama set 33:16 China’s round-the-clock production pace meets American labor protections: “This is just how we usually do things” 38:02 Working with American actors: non-union labor, influencers, acting dreams, and the pressure to survive 41:13 Breakout actors: short dramas are also replicating the star-making machine 44:30 Who watches overseas short dramas? What Is Cluely?
Cluely is an AI company that got its start helping people cheat in job interviews. Its founder Roy Lee dropped out of Columbia, raised millions in funding led by a16z — yet the company's viral comedy video series is far more famous than the product itself. This episode, we sit down with communications professional Ivy to unpack Cluely, and the unconventional founder behind it. Can viral marketing actually convert into business value? Why was hiring Remy Zee — the creator who blew up impersonating Chinese international students — arguably the best business decision Roy Lee ever made? What does Cluely's frat-house culture of lookmaxxing, protein obsession, and expensing employee dates really say about the company? And what does the male gaze baked into their short-form dramas, and the rise of the "ABG CMO" as a Silicon Valley trend, actually mean? Is Roy Lee's rise a story of individual genius — or has the AI era simply opened a door for Asian men that was never there before? As AI reshapes the Silicon Valley ecosystem, Asian men who once played by every rule are now competing for influence, capital, and attention in entirely new ways. The cost of that reinvention, and its limits, are worth examining carefully. 00:01:58 Dropped out of Columbia, cheated in interviews, raised $20M? 00:05:53 What even is Cluely? From cheating tool to meeting notes app and new product Bounty 00:08:29 Viral marketing, influencers Remy Zee and Ling Long 00:17:46 Company culture as a frat house: lookmaxxing and performative masculinity 00:24:26 The male gaze: female characters in their short-form dramas, and the rise of the ABG CMO 00:36:44 The Asian male identity crisis and the AI era glow-up 00:41:15 Is Roy Lee the self-help guru of the TikTok generation? 00:48:11 The Gen Z founder taking VC calls from a bathroom stall 00:47:17 Redefining agency: social media clout isn't the whole story 00:59:03 Founder-led comms: how Roy Lee spun a fake numbers scandal into a viral moment and what it says about media in 2026 【我们是谁 Who We Are】 新新人类是一档由几个与互联网一起长大的新生代科技记者主持的播客,致力于站在中美交汇点上,解读全球科技潮流与人文的交织。 The Links】 Child’s Play, by Sam Kriss 【支持我们 Please Support Us】 如果喜欢这期节目并愿意支持我们: 海外用户:patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl 海内用户:afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod 商务合作邮箱:[email protected] If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Those Abroad: patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl Those in China: afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod Business Inquiries Email: [email protected]

Technology Was Never Neutral
When AI Goes from Tool to Weapon, how do we find our footing? In early 2026, Claude was blacklisted by the White House. It became a turning point for AI's public image — and a moment that made us realize AI may have quietly come of age. It's no longer just a tech topic; it's a political issue, a moment that demands you pick a side. In this crossover episode, host Yiwen sits down with Xiaohua, host of The American Roulette, and Lei, a Silicon Valley investor, to unpack how AI went from a technical question to the most politically charged issue of the moment. Who gets to draw the red lines? When Super PACs start spending AI money to swing the midterms, when data centers push up electricity bills across red and blue states alike, when American public sentiment toward AI has fallen through the floor — is AI's "nuclear moment" a technological singularity, or a political one? We also get into the two starkly different realities the U.S. and China are living through on this front. Recorded in early April. 03:06 Anthropic vs. the Pentagon: The Turning Point of AI's Politicization 04:48 Two Red Lines: Mass Surveillance and Fully Autonomous Weapons 07:41 In a Legislative Vacuum, Companies Are Forced to Arbitrate 10:33 Silicon Valley's Political Shift and the Return of Employee Protest 14:33 Anthropic's Business Math: Public Image Beats Government Contracts 17:08 Dario vs. Sam Altman: Two Outcomes on the Same Day 24:05 Super PACs Go to War Over AI Regulation 30:30 AI Polls Worse Than ICE 32:35 Two Realities: OpenClaw and the Slow-Boiling Frog 38:19 Data Centers, Electric Bills, and NIMBY: Where AI Fear Gets Real 43:21 If AI Creates All the GDP, What Leverage Do Ordinary People Have? 50:30 Bernie Sanders' Claude Video and the Left's AI Narrative 53:43 Tokens Go Global: Two Industrial Systems for AI 【我们是谁 Who We Are】 新新人类是一档由几个与互联网一起长大的新生代科技记者主持的播客,致力于站在中美交汇点上,解读全球科技潮流与人文的交织。 一闻:一个对地铁比手机更上瘾的记者 小华:媒体人 Lei:风险投资人 【支持我们 Please Support Us】 如果喜欢这期节目并愿意支持我们: 海外用户:patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl 海内用户:afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod 商务合作邮箱:[email protected] If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Those Abroad: patreon.com/c/pixelperfect_xxrl Those in China: afdian.com/a/pixelperfectpod Business Inquiries Email: [email protected]
