No. 395: Gina Evans
Today marks my good friend Gina Evans’ second appearance on the ButteCast. She first joined the show in March of 2023 to talk about her long road to recovery after she was hit by a truck while riding her bike on Continental Drive one June morning in 2010. At the time, she thought she was near the end of that recovery. As it turns out, she wasn’t even close. Gina has been through so much in the last three and a half years, that it is hard to begin to even list it all. She still cannot run her business where she shuttled runners, hikers and bicyclists on the Continental Divide Trail. She can barely even drive a vehicle at all, and riding her bike through those fun mountain trails is still a dream. Yet, Gina still seems to find a way to do more for her community than most people who have not been hit by a truck. She serves on the selection committee for the Butte Sports Hall of Fame. She is a board member for the Highlands Cycling Club. Her latest project was to bring a free screening of the movie “Ride to Resilience” Thursday at the Montana Tech Library Auditorium. Gina bills the film as so much more than a mountain bike movie. She is hoping to see as many first responders, members of the 15-90 Search & Rescue, medical professionals, counselors, athletes and other non-profit organizations involved in providing support in the community show up to watch the film. Doors open at 6, and the movie starts at 6:30. Yesterday, I met with Gina inside the vault at the Metals Sports Bar & Grill for a fun conversation. Listen in as she talks about her medical complications from that cowardice hit-and-run incident, which has turned out to be the gift that just keeps on giving. Listen in as she talks about her many projects on many organizations. Listen in to hear why you should want to check out “Ride to Resilience” Thursday at Montana Tech. No. 394: Brittani Bush and Bill Polk
Today we are talking Special Olympics basketball with Brittani Bush and Bill Polk. Brittani, a two-time Montana Gatorade Player of the Year in softball, is the vice president of sports for Special Olympics Montana. Bill is the sports director. Both are busy getting read for the Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament, which will be held Nov. 12-14 in the Mining City. This will be the start of a three-run run in Butte for the tournament. It was last in town in 2022. Brittani and Bill are looking for volunteers. They are going to need 650 plus volunteers to pull off the tournament, which is just three weeks away. They are confident the people of Butte and around the state will step up to get the job done. As I wrote in a column posted on ButteCast.com this morning, the Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament is how I got in to refereeing in the first place. It was so much fun that I thought I would try joining the Montana Officials Association. You do not have to referee to be a volunteer. There are all kinds of jobs that need to be filled. But if you want to try to referee and are nervous, like I was the first time, they will give you training before sending you onto the court. Earlier today, I caught up with Brittani and Bill over Zoom for a fun conversation. Listen in to hear their passion about Special Olympics. Listen in to how they first got involved and why they still do it today. Listen in to this episode to see why you will want to be part of the Special Olympics. (Click here to sign up.) Tap ’er Light Special Olympics basketball
The Special Olympics State Basketball tournament will be held in gyms throughout the Mining City next month. If you have the time, I suggest that you volunteer to help out with the tournament. They need volunteers for so many jobs, and that includes refereeing the basketball games. I first volunteered to referee when the tournament came to Butte in 2019. I did it again in 2022 when the tournament returned after COVID. If there is one thing better than watching the Special Olympics, it is volunteering to be involved in the Special Olympics. Right now, we need a lot of people to sign up to volunteer. Sign up at SOMT.org. Trust me, you will thank me if you do. That is what today’s column is about. You can read it for yourself at ButteCast.com. No. 393: Brayton Erickson
Brayton Erickson is the executive director of the Butte Rescue Mission. He started working at that position in March of 2020, and the good things the Mission has done since are obvious. For instance, the Mission opened a new building, the Center of Hope, earlier this year. The Mission works to see lives transformed and filled with hope as the community works together to fight homelessness, poverty and addiction. It provides a long-term road to recovery, an emergency place to stay and a meal for those in need. Brayton recently made news by spending 24 straight hours on a bench outside the Salvation Army building on Harrison Avenue. He extended an invitation to anyone who wanted to talk to sit down and discuss the many problems that face our community. Brayton said he welcomed 48 visitors in those 24 hours, and he heard a lot of good ideas. So, earlier today, I met with Brayton at his office inside the Center of Hope for a great conversation. Listen in to hear some of those good ideas. Listen in to hear how Brayton, a boy who grew up in the Gallatin Valley, ended up working at the Rescue Mission with his wife, Syd. Listen as he talks about taking the big job and how he approaches every day. Listen in to hear how the Mission and supporting groups in the community are making progress. Listen in to hear how you can pitch in and help out. Today’s episode of the ButteCast is presented by the Jewelry Design Center. No. 392: Mike Maesar
Today, we are talking a little soccer and a lot more with Mike Maesar, the director of the Mining City FC soccer club. This past weekend, one of his teams won a tournament in Idaho Falls, earning Leskovar Honda Athlete of the Week honors. When doing some research before this conversation, I found out that Mike did not even play soccer when he attended Butte High School, where he graduated in 1997. Instead, he went out for wrestling. He first joined the team as a junior, then he placed fifth at 98 pounds as a senior to help the Bulldog capture the 1997 Class AA State title. That was the 15th, and final championship for legendary coach Jim Street. Mike got into soccer when his children got into the sport. He started refereeing because they needed referees. He got into coaching because they needed coaches. Then, he became the director because, you guessed it, they needed a director. The Mining City FC will open registration for the 2027 spring season on Nov. 1. Registration will be available at MiningCityFC.com, and scholarships are available to those in need. The goal is to get more boys and girls playing soccer and having fun, so nobody will be turned away. Earlier today, I met with Mike at my de facto study inside the vault at the Metals Sports Bar & Grill for a fun conversation. Listen in as Mike talks about his days wrestling for a Butte icon. Listen as we talk about how he got into coaching and why he continued to climb the ladder to help the game grow in the Mining City. Listen in as I suggest a candidate to be his next assistant coach. It would really be a great movie if he gets him.
