Einstein, Tony Robbins, Zig Zigglar, Helen Keler, etc. The only exception so far has been the quote from my friend Frank Cheung who said “It’s like a metaphor for life, every man stands alone”. I love that quote. Well today I’ve got another quote from someone I know personally. My brother, Rory McGivern. Rory is a business man, family guy and of course a huge Def Leppard fan. Today’s quote comes from many years ago when were essential still kids. I was reading a book (maybe a Tony Robbins book) and I read out a cool quote I found in the book. Rory said quotes are stupid. I said they are NOT. And he said they are just made up and anyone could make a quote. So I said ok give me a quote then. And Rory McGivern said…. “He who smells the rose… gets a good wiff” Wow… MIND BLOWN !!! Rory may have said this off the top of his head as a joke. And even as way to mock the creation of quotes. But I believe he was tapping into Jung’s collective unconscious in that moment and he pulled out a piece of intellectual gold. “He who smells the rose, gets a good wiff” What Rory is actually saying here is that you have to take action. If you want a good wiff you have to get off your butt, find your rose and smell it. We all know people that sit around waiting for their big break. They are sitting on the couch saying maybe someday I’ll get a good wiff? They sit and wait and hope that the wind will blow just right and the smell of the rose will come right up to their lazy nostrils. What Rory is saying is don’t wait around for the wind. Because the wind may never come. Get off the couch and go get your good wiff. Even a dog knows that they have to take action to get a good wiff. My dog, Pepper, doesn’t wait around for a good wiff to appear right in front of her nose. She seeks it out and gets her nose right in there. And a dog has a sense of smell 10 000 to 100 0000 times more sensitive than humans. And they still don’t wait around for the wind to bring them a good wiff… Pepper pulls like crazy to get her nose as close as possible and she gets a good wiff. Hopefully your “good wiff” is different from Pepper’s. Maybe it is a promotion at your job. Maybe your “good wiff” is improved personal fitness. Maybe it is starting podcast. Or launching a new business. Whatever your “good wiff” is you can’t get it if you don’t smell the rose. He who smells the rose, gets a good wiff. So here’s the question: Whatever a “good wiff” means to you… what could you do right now to move you towards the rose. Because if you don’t have the rose you won’t get a good wiff.
