#269 Chris Mater — Red Bull, Surfing Australia & Founding the Surfing Super League
This week I sat down with Chris Mater, and this one is a masterclass in building a career by backing yourself at every turn. Chris started out as a professional skier before landing one of the most exciting jobs in sport — becoming one of Red Bull's first ever employees in Australia. He spent nearly 20 years with the brand, growing it from the ground up in Australia before heading to the United States to take on even bigger roles. Few people in the world understand action sports business at the level Chris does. From there he stepped into the top job at Surfing Australia, serving as CEO for five years and helping shape the future of the sport at a national level. And now he has created something that has the whole Australian surfing community talking — the Surfing Super League, a brand new competition format set to change the landscape of surfing in this country. This is a conversation about building a life in industries you love, what it takes to lead at the highest level, and what the Surfing Super League means for the future of Australian surfing. In this episode we cover: His journey as a professional skier Becoming one of Red Bull's first employees in Australia Nearly 20 years building Red Bull across Australia and the United States What made Red Bull's culture so different Becoming CEO of Surfing Australia Five years shaping the future of surfing at a national level Creating the Surfing Super League What the Super League means for Australian surfing Lessons from a career built at the intersection of sport and business Follow Chris Instagram https://www.instagram.com/materman1/ Linked In https://www.linkedin.com/in/cjmater/?isSelfProfile=false Surfing Super League https://surfingsuperleague.com/ — Connect with Cooper Instagram https://www.instagram.com/cooperchapman/ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/cooper-chapman-08a278151/ The Good Human Factory https://www.thegoodhumanfactory.com The Good Human Factory Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thegoodhumanfactory/ Workshop and Speaking Enquiries https://form.typeform.com/to/DSPSnvEH 1% Good Club Book https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/e1xrkr https://amzn.to/46ve1i2 THE GOOD HUMAN FACTORY™️ 2020 Hosted on Acast. #268 Cooper Cheshire — Losing an Uncle to Suicide, Swimming Until He Landed in Hospital & Why He's Using Sport to Fight for Mental Health
⚠️ Content Warning This episode contains open discussions about suicide and the loss of a family member. Please take care of yourself first. If you're not in the right headspace, come back to this one when you're ready. If you need support, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 (available 24/7) or visit lifeline.org.au This week I sat down with Cooper Cheshire, and this one hit close to home. Cooper is the youngest person ever to finish the Geo Bay Swim solo, a Rottnest 25km Ultra solo finisher and the Under 18 Open Water Swimming WA State Champion. But what stood out most was how open and grounded he is for someone his age. Cooper and I share something we don't get to talk about often. We have both lost an uncle to suicide. We spoke about how that loss shaped him, why he is using sport to raise money for mental health, and what it really takes to chase big goals as a young athlete, including the swim that landed him in hospital. This one is for anyone who has ever used movement to process something they couldn't put into words. In this episode we cover: Losing an uncle to suicide and how it shaped him His long distance swimming journey and big dreams The swim that landed him in hospital Raising money for mental health through sport The mindset it takes to be a young athlete chasing big goals Follow Cooper Cheshire Instagram https://www.instagram.com/coopercheshire23/ Connect with Cooper Workshop and Speaking Enquiries https://form.typeform.com/to/DSPSnvEH 1% Good Club Book https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/e1xrkr https://amzn.to/46ve1i2 Instagram https://www.instagram.com/cooperchapman/ TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@cooperchapman_ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/cooper-chapman-08a278151/ The Good Human Factory Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thegoodhumanfactory/ The Good Human Factory https://www.thegoodhumanfactory.com THE GOOD HUMAN FACTORY™️ 2020 Hosted on Acast. #267 Jess Rigby — A Suspicious Death in Fiji, 60 Minutes & the Gold Coast Mum Fighting for Justice
⚠️ Content Warning This episode contains open discussions about pregnancy loss, miscarriage, anxiety, endometriosis and the suspicious death of a family member. Please take care of yourself first. If you're not in the right headspace, come back to this one when you're ready. If you need support, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 (available 24/7) or visit lifeline.org.au This week I sat down with Jess Rigby, and this one is one of the most powerful conversations I have had on this show. Jess is a Gold Coast entrepreneur, mother of four and author of While the Baby Slept, a memoir publishing November 2026. She lost her first daughter at eighteen weeks. She fought endometriosis for nine years before anyone listened. She went through miscarriages and divorce before building a blended family of six from scratch. She manages anxiety daily, the kind that lives in the body before it lives in the mind. And then in December 2024, her brother in law Jason Rigby was found dying in his staff apartment at the Crowne Plaza Nadi in Fiji. He was 40 years old, three days from his 41st birthday. The official ruling was suicide. His family has never accepted that ruling. The case has been featured on 60 Minutes Australia, a follow up story is in development, and the investigation is still active. Jess has been fighting for justice across international borders from a kitchen table on the Gold Coast while raising four kids and running two businesses. This is a conversation about what it actually takes to keep going when life keeps asking impossible things of you. About grief, anxiety, repair and choosing the people in front of you every single day even when your body is telling you it has had enough. In this episode we cover: Losing her first daughter at eighteen weeks Nine years fighting to be heard with endometriosis Miscarriage, divorce and building a blended family of six Managing anxiety and panic attacks daily Therapy, medication and the tools that actually work The death of Jason Rigby in Fiji in December 2024 Why the family disputes the official ruling Fighting for justice across international borders The 60 Minutes investigation and where the case stands Her memoir While the Baby Slept publishing November 2026 Justice for Jason https://www.jessicarigby.com Pre-order While the Baby Slept https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HGL7VG7P?spcref=PUBLISHED_PREORDER_LIVE Follow Jess on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/justiceforjasonrigby/ Connect with Cooper Workshop and Speaking Enquiries https://form.typeform.com/to/DSPSnvEH 1% Good Club Book https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/e1xrkr https://amzn.to/46ve1i2 Instagram https://www.instagram.com/cooperchapman/ TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@cooperchapman_ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/cooper-chapman-08a278151/ The Good Human Factory Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thegoodhumanfactory/ The Good Human Factory https://www.thegoodhumanfactory.com THE GOOD HUMAN FACTORY™️ 2020 Hosted on Acast. #266 Valentino Guseli —2x Olympian, World Record Holder & Still Just Getting Started
This week I sat down with Valentino Guseli. He is 20 years old and already one of the greatest snowboarders on the planet. We spent two days together before the mics even came out — surfing, snowboarding and making music on the NSW south coast. The conversation that followed was one of my favourites. Val grew up in Dalmeny, a tiny town on the south coast, and has gone on to compete at two Winter Olympics, set the world record for the highest halfpipe air, win two Overall Park and Pipe Crystal Globes and become the first snowboarder in history to podium in all three park and pipe disciplines in a single season. We talk about his upbringing, what it takes to reach the top of a sport before you turn 20, bouncing back from a torn ACL and what is driving him as he chases even bigger goals. Val is creative, grounded and genuinely one of the most exciting young athletes in the world right now. This one will fire you up. In this episode we cover: Growing up in Dalmeny on the NSW south coast Two Winter Olympics — Beijing 2022 and Milano Cortina 2026 World record for the highest halfpipe air Two Overall Park and Pipe Crystal Globes and the Big Air Crystal Globe First snowboarder to podium in all three park and pipe disciplines in one season Coming back from a torn ACL Surfing, music and life away from the snow What is driving him as he chases even bigger goals Follow Valentino Instagram https://www.instagram.com/valentino.guseli/ Connect with Cooper Workshop and Speaking Enquiries https://form.typeform.com/to/DSPSnvEH 1% Good Club Book https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/e1xrkr https://amzn.to/46ve1i2 Instagram https://www.instagram.com/cooperchapman/ TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@cooperchapman_ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/cooper-chapman-08a278151/ The Good Human Factory Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thegoodhumanfactory/ The Good Human Factory https://www.thegoodhumanfactory.com THE GOOD HUMAN FACTORY™️ 2020 Hosted on Acast. #265 Ryan Bautista — Rusty, Red Bull, Balter & the Super Greens Brand Built by a Surf Industry Insider
This week I sat down with Ryan Bautista, and this one is for anyone who has ever wondered what it looks like to build a career by following what you love. Ryan has spent the last two decades at the intersection of surf, sport and business. He was part of the hyper growth of Rusty in Australia through the 2000s, one of the most exciting periods in Australian surf culture, before moving into athlete management with Red Bull where he worked alongside some of the biggest names in action sports. From there he moved into the WSL, helping shape the business of professional surfing, before taking his commercial skills into the craft beer world with Balter and other leading beer brands. Now Ryan has made his most personal move yet — founding Good Street, a super greens brand built on the belief that feeling good should be simple, accessible and something you actually want to do every day. This is a brilliant conversation about building a career in industries you love, knowing when to make the leap, and what it really takes to go from employee to founder. Ryan is switched on, generous and genuinely one of the good ones. In this episode we cover: Being part of the hyper growth of Rusty in Australia in the 2000s The surf industry boom and what that era taught him about business Athlete management at Red Bull and working with elite action sports talent His time at the WSL and the business of professional surfing Working with Balter and other leading beer brands Making the leap from employee to founder Building Good Street and why he started a super greens brand What it takes to launch a product brand from scratch The intersection of health, wellness and surf culture Good Street Super Greens - CODE - COOP25 - for 25% OFF https://goodstreet.com.au/ Follow Good Street Instagram https://www.instagram.com/_good_street/ Connect with Cooper Workshop and Speaking Enquiries https://form.typeform.com/to/DSPSnvEH 1% Good Club Book https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/e1xrkr https://amzn.to/46ve1i2 Instagram https://www.instagram.com/cooperchapman/ TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@cooperchapman_ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/cooper-chapman-08a278151/ The Good Human Factory Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thegoodhumanfactory/ The Good Human Factory https://www.thegoodhumanfactory.com THE GOOD HUMAN FACTORY™️ 2020 Hosted on Acast.
